The Armenian ecclesiastical calendar marks December 25th as the feast day of Saint Stephen.
St. StephenSt Stephen was a Jew who believed in Christ and served in the Church of Jerusalem. All we know
about his life, trial and death are found in the Book of Acts, chapters 6 and 7 (Click to read).

He became the first Martyr of the Christian church, a result of being stoned by his fellow Jewish brothers for confessing the truth about Jesus the Messiah. Before His death, he was chosen by the Church members to be part of the first group of seven deacons. This is why he is called St Stephen the Proto-Deacon and the Proto-Martyr.

This feast in the Armenian Church is appropriately dedicated to all current deacons. They serve the altar on that day adorned with their finest orarion (ուրար) and are also granted the privilege to wear a crown (սաղաւարտ), which is part of the vestment of the priest.
The Feast of St. Stephen was celebrated that day at the Catholicosate of the Great House of Cilicia. (click for further information)

H.G. Nareg sermon

Our Church also celebrated this feast on the proximate Sunday, December
30th, and our deacons similarly partook in this beautiful tradition.
His Grace Archbishop Nareg Alemezian, the former and first Pastor of our church, who is currently the Dean of the Seminary in Bikfaya, delivered the sermon. He outlined the important role of the deacon in the church, and described how the tradition is celebrated by the deacons (and possibly our people’s future priests and martyrs) of the Seminary.
