Lemkin-Tehlirian Poetry Event
On March 29th, the Armenian Students Association of the University of British Columbia and Hillel BC hosted the first annual Lemkin-Tehlirian Prize for Poetry in light of the centennial of the Armenian Genocide.
The Poetry Prize is named after Raphael Lemkin, the Polish jurist of Jewish descent who framed the legal term Genocide, and Soghomon Tehlirian, whose trial inspired Lemkin’s work and highlighted the need for international courts to address crimes against humanity.
The jury for the contest consisted of Adara Goldberg, Education Direction for the Vancouver Holocaust Education Centre, and Dr. Marlene Briggs, Professor at the English Department at UBC.
The event was led by Avetis Muradyan, President of the Armenian Students Association, and Jordana Shani, Managing Direction of Hillel BC. The evening was attended by and included in addition Very Reverend Father Tahanian (St. Gregory Church), Reverend Father Garabedian (St. Vartan Church) and Rabbi Bregman (Hillel BC).
The first place winner was Maryam Garabedian, for her poem “The Case”, and second place was taken by Shoshana Hereld for “Hypocrisy in Palestine”. Honourable mentions to Patrick Bruskiewich for “The Great Circle of Death” and Gordon Roback for “All the Same”.
